RETURN TO DEATH PARK: A grindhouse slasher with an unkillable villain

A common trope in horror media is that some entities never truly stay dead. Just take a look at a large portion of ‘80’s horror franchises, where the antagonist returns over and over for subsequent films, seemingly beating the odds of being killed in the previous iteration. Writer/director Ken Brewer, along with co-writer Meri Gyetvay, take this popular notion and go all in for the latest edition of the long standing franchise Return to Death Park.
For those unaware, the Death Park series of independent films has been around for quite some time, and features a maniacal, masked killer (Ken Brewer) who hunts down his victims in a popular, expansive park. In this latest entry, the killer is resurrected from the morgue, and immediately sets out to continue his bloody, menacing violence against unsuspecting nature lovers.
Once word gets out that not only has the killer inexplicably escaped, but murders are once again being reported in the park, a hefty $50,000 bounty is put out for anyone who can take him out once and for all. A group of eager participants immediately head out in an attempt to claim the reward (and the bragging rights) for their own.
Those who join in on the hunt are an eclectic bunch, each with their own reasons for putting their life on the line to capture this masked menace. For some, it’s the most obvious answer - they want the money. For others, it’s more personal, like for leader Chloe (Josi Kat). Regardless, several pods of hunters set out to hike the trails in search of this invincible murderer.
As you’d imagine, many fall to the sinister traps of our killer in bloody, gory and over the top fashion. How is one man able to take out so many armed people whose primary focus is to kill him? Why do the vast majority of them make terrible decisions when it comes to fighting him? Well, that’s a tale as old as time in the horror realm, and this film leans heavily into that notion.
Return to Death Park is gritty, grindhouse filmmaking through and through. The creators clearly weren’t set out to make a masterpiece, and instead dove deep into the bloody sensationalism that makes up the DNA of so many of its predecessors.
The cast is large, consisting of actors such as Linnea Swanson, Bridget Powers, Nicole Sixx, and Ronnie Angel. Many of them aren’t even given names, and are simply listed at “Bounty Hunter”. In the end, this point doesn't really matter, because they still carry their own as individuals in this simplistic plot.
One of the most redeeming qualities of this movie is the fact that all of these people are likable in their own ways. When one character makes a bad choice, another will immediately call them out on it. The dialogue amongst them comes across so authentic that it feels as though they ad-libbed a good chunk of it. Even though they’re all making irresponsible moves, they still seemingly feel like people you’d want to hang out with, which is essential for a viewer once the bodies start hitting the ground.
Props also need to be given for the unapologetic practical effects. The cast and crew did what they could with the resources they had, and the end result is still far more entertaining to watch than something artificially generated.
Is Return to Death Park going to appeal to the masses? Most likely not. If you’re someone who digs grindhouse slashers featuring unique characters, then this might be up your alley.
